The Giver

In creating a classroom innovation about acting out a story, I rediscovered an excellent book. If you haven't had the chance, I suggest you pick up The Giver, by Lois Lowry. It's a fascinating look into the extremes of life through the eyes of a twelve year old boy living in an Orwellian society. The story begs the question, "What do we lose when we gain control?" It's a relatively short, easy read, intended for middle school aged students, but I feel that its lessons hold true in high school and beyond.

In a coincidence of timing, a film adaptation of the book is rumored to be in development, with Jeff Bridges as The Giver.
